چکیده

Automated content analysis software tools have significantly aided in the study of design processes in the recent past. However, they suffer from the lack of domain knowledge and insight that a human expert can provide. In this paper, we adopt the use of text visualization techniques that help in gaining insights and identifying relevant patterns from the results obtained through a content analysis software. We motivate our approach with the observation that examining overall patterns in data aids us significantly in identifying interesting and relevant details concerning specific contexts in the data. We use the proposed approach to study the effect of adopting Laseau’s “design funnel” of alternating divergent and convergent design processes among student teams in a toy design course, and compare it to student teams that follow a free brainstorming process. We demonstrate the application of lexical dispersion plots and text concordances as a means to further examine the output of a conventional content analysis tool, and use these techniques to separate patterns from anomalies. We identify cases of concept consistency across teams using the dispersion plots, and identify cases of multiple word senses through text concordances. Finally, we present insights that were obtained through these visualizations and propose contexts for further studies of the data. ∗Address all correspondence to this author. †School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (by courtesy)

The Concept Plot: a concept mapping visualization tool for asynchronous web-based brainstorming sessions

Electronic Brainstorming Systems have been shown to lead to more ideas, yet unsupported face-to-face brainstorming is still widely preferred. This paper proposes a Graphical User Interface for a web-based system for design problem-solving or other intellective tasks involving convergent and divergent thinking. Referring to the literature on Group Support Systems and Information and Knowledge Vi...

Designing Concept Maps from Procedural Visuals: an Innovative Approach towards Information Processing in Efl Context

Concept maps have been traditionally used as a technique for information comprehension, visualization, brainstorming, schematization and document production in multiple ways. They are also considered an effective tool for visual-spatial learning. Concept maps have been used successfully in EFL learning situations. However, in most cases, concept maps have been based on the existing text availab...

Using Visualization to Support Idea Generation in Context

Idea Generation has been a topic of creativity research for centuries. A wealth of creative processes has been devised to overcome difficulties at the perceptual, emotional, and cultural levels. Brainstorming in particular has grown to become synonymous with idea generation. This paper discusses our preliminary study on current conception of brainstorming and calls for future studies that help ...

De-Identified Feature-based Visualization of Facial Expression for Enhanced Text Chat

The lack of visibility in text-based chat can hinder communication, especially when nonverbal cues are instrumental to the production and understanding of messages. However, communicating rich nonverbal cues such as facial expressions may be technologically more costly (e.g., demand of bandwidth for video streaming) and socially less desirable (e.g., disclosing other personal and context inform...
